Common Pests

Spiders (class Arachnida) are eight-legged creatures belonging to a group (phylum) called Arthropoda that are different from insects (class Hexapoda) on several easy to see characteristics. They have no antennae, their eyes are like ours and not segmented, and they have four pairs of legs. There are some poisonous spiders like Sydney Funnel Web Spider, Wolf Spiders, the Northern Rivers the Mouse Spider, Funnel Web Spider, Redback Spiders, the Black House Spider and the White-tailed Spider.

Cockroaches are found all over the world. There are more than 3,500 species of cockroach. The most common varieties in Australia include the German, American and Oriental cockroaches. American cockroaches are large and black. German cockroaches are smaller and brown. Oriental cockroaches are medium sized and dark brown to black in colour. Because cockroaches eat a wide range of food, including rotting garbage, it is believed that they spread a number of diseases to humans including salmonella

Ants are insects and like all insects, the body has three main parts - the head, the thorax (middle section), and the abdomen. Insects have six legs that are attached to the thorax, three to each side. The head is made up of the jaws, the eyes, and the antennae. The eyes of ants are made up of many lenses and are called compound eyes. Compound eyes make it possible for ants to see movement very well. An ant's head showing antennae. The antennae are special organs used by the ant to smell taste

Bed bugs have been known as human parasites for thousands of years. Bed bugs are parasitic insects of the cimices (the genus Cimex) family that feed exclusively on blood. They usually feed on their hosts without being noticed.

Fleas are the insects forming the order Siphonaptera. They are wingless, with mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. Fleas are external parasites, living by hematophagy off the blood of mammals and birds.

Rodents are mammals, about 40% of mammal species are rodents, and they are found in vast numbers on all continents other than Antarctica. The most common rodents include mice, rats, squirrels, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, and hamsters. Rodents use their sharp incisors teeth to chew or gnaw wood, break into food, and bite predators. Most rodents eat seeds or plants, though some have more varied diets.
